These can be nuts, lentils, legumes, cooked beans or meat analog. Then you might have your vegetable servings. You might have your vegetables raw, or perhaps you can make a shake at their store. In fact, it's fine to use some fruit in this shake to restore really tasty! At the top the 'vegan food pyramid', you've oils and margarine. These include the things that you ultimately want to avoid, simply because they still have the power of causing you to definitely gain weight, instead of losing it.

My family is kind of short on money. My mom doesn't care if I go vegan but I need a list of some foods I want her to buy. She's been asking for a list for a while but I don't want to give her too big of a list. What are the most important vegan basics I should buy? Not just vegetables, but types of grains and staples for simple vegan meals.

  1. Pulses (like kidney beans and chick peas) are very cheap. Rice and nuts are also vegan staples. Add some spices and vegetables for a delicious low cost meal.

  2. One of my favorite things to do is steam mixed fresh veggies and put them over rice with some salt and pepper. It is light yet filling and it tastes cleaner than anything else i have ever eaten. I change the veggies up to change the taste of the mix but that can constitute a good chunk of the meal planning and its easy.

  3. Rice is one that is a huge staple to get it’s really cheap. Beans, lentils, pasta are some ideas too those are important to get enough protein and carbs bc you can’t have meat or like things made with eggs like bread
    soymilk so you can get enough calcium

    bananas, oranges, apples, grapes are cheaper fruit compared to like rasberries
    if you want they have like bags of frozen veggies u steam in a bag but if not lettuce, brocholi, tomatoes, celery, carrots are good whatever you like to eat for veggies

  4. Rice, vegetables and fruits, pasta, peanut butter, oats, dry beans and lentils (canned are okay too, but usually more expensive), and nuts (try to eat mostly raw, unsalted),

    I would suggest that you try to buy vegetables and fruits that are in season. They will be much cheaper, and riper as well. Shop at your local farmers market if you can, and you can even think about growing your own food.

    Make smoothies using a frozen banana (peeled and sliced before going in the freezer), whatever other fruits you want, and usually water or unsweetened nondairy milk (or regular milk, if you must). Adding a whole frozen banana usually makes them much more filling, and often times they can be used as an entire breakfast.

  5. Canned foods are some of the best in my opinion and they’re pretty cheap. I like green beans, peas, wax beans, ocra, stir fry veggies, asparagus, etc.

    Get some curry and some other spices like tumeric and such to season them up.

    Also get some beans. You can eat fat mexican food with beans for pretty cheap.

    I like to get the small tortillas and the big taco shells and I put the vegan sour cream and dry rub taco seasoning (old el paso) on the tortilla and the beans in the shell and stick it together.

  6. Nature’s perfect plants: coconut and banana.
    for grocery shopping, always buy “dry” goods such as beans, pasta and rice etc in bulk cos it’s cheaper that way. And buy fruits and veggies in season because they are usually more abundant hence cheaper plus the quality is good. Buy only what you can eat within the next few days (with the exception of the dry goods I mentioned earlier) so that you have less waste. (such as things getting thrown out because they past their “best by” date)

    Try to avoid pre-made stuff such as microwaveable dinners etc because they are more expensive. You are just paying for the convenience of the meal being prepared for you so it’s more expensive. One exception are fruits and veggies etc in cans because they are usually packed or frozen only hours if not minutes after harvest so they are sometimes better than fresh which have already traveled for days on trucks. They also keep for a long time without spoilage. It helps thta you make a weekly menu so you have a definite list when you go to the store and not be susceptible to impulse buying which can add dollars to your budget.

    Basically, use common sense. And never go shopping when yo are hungry.
